The Yorkie Yapped at Midnight: A Sam Scoop Mystery

Sam asleep on the floor, dreaming...

There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot, dry Santa Ana’s that come down through the mountain passes and curl your fur and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You might even get a goat to squeal like a fat monk in an earthquake if you lean on him just right…

Dammit, I can’t believe I’m back. Back where I grew up, the yard I left so long ago. A hot and rocky place I never wanted to see again this side of the veil. I’m Sam Scoop – hard-boiled doggie detective. My breed is Golden, and so is my heart…as long as you don’t get on my “ruff” side, anyway. Tread there brother and you’ll find that not even your owners can save you. But fate has pulled me back to this burg, with me clawing and growling in protest the whole way.

Did I say fate? Not unless Fate’s earthly form is six pounds of rhinestone studded smarminess. I’m here because of the Yorkie.

The Yorkie…now there’s one feisty femme fatale. Sure, on the outside she’s all sugar and spice. But on the inside? Not so nice. She has a taste for expensive collars and other dog’s dinners. Ten minutes alone with her and even a Cardinal would be tempted to “kicka’ dat tiny backside.” She has to be the reason I’ve been sent back…I’m sure of it.

But that’s all I’m sure of. I need to get to the gist behind this; who hired me, what do they expect, what’s the payoff? And who do I gotta lick up to in order to get back home?

I’m walking into this without a scent to follow. And unless I want to find my nose rubbed in someone else’s stink, I think I’d better pay a visit to the Mayor.

Updates!

It's been a very busy weekend! First off, congratulations to our friend Samantha for winning the 8x10 photo of Sam's Troubled Times! Sam is busy prepping it to mail as we speak...

He is taking this very seriously!

You should hopefully receive it soon in the mail. Unfortunately, our plans to pawtograph it did not work out too well! We have pawprints where there shouldn't be pawprints! How did Lassie make it look so easy?

Here is a picture of Sam after he finally got his bath this weekend:

I will be leaving for training for two weeks. Aaron will be keeping Sam's blog updated while I am gone!

Troubled Times

Because of the recent heat wave, Sam hasn't been able to take a walk for a couple of weeks. Aaron and I have been worried about how he spends his time...

Because he's a dark red Golden, people often assume that he's an Irish Setter. I think he's starting to take it to heart!

Sam will send an 8x10 copy of the picture in this post to the first person who can identify the painting behind him... No cats are eligible for this contest - sorry, Sam's rule. (Click on the picture to view large size.)

Hot hot hot!

Arizona has been gripped by our annual heat wave otherwise known as "summer". Our high yesterday was 115 degrees. It is hot - really hot! Sam has not been allowed outside except for the necessary trips to do his business. Sam is bored.

We did spend quite a bit of time inside. I found this old picture of Sam.

...and mentioned the word "bath"...

...but it was too hot. I did notice his toes need a trim:

We can fortunately escape the heat by going to the movies. We took our neice and nephew to see "Harry Potter". Sam thought he could be in a "Hairy Potter" movie too!

Sam would like us to fix whatever is making it hot outside so that he can go for walks again. He does consider himself lucky, though, that it was too hot for a bath...

And for all of you who asked, the gummi bear did end up being eaten by Sam. Sam would like to mention that red gummi bears are now his favorite!

A dog and his bottle...

We have not had internet access all weekend. Only now has it come on, and I don't trust how long we will keep it.

I do need to ask, how many of you have dogs that have a things for bottles? Sam has quite a collection. He guards them jealously, and swoops in to grab them if we get to close to them...

Let me present Exhibit A:

...And B. As you can see he has no preference for brand...

He has also been keeping an eye on a wee red gummi bear who is dangerously close to falling off the counter:

He watched it for a long time...

4th of July and a little silliness...

Sam hopes you all have had a wonderful 4th of July weekend!

Sam was very patriotic yesterday:

But, you always have to get chores done on the weekend, and Sam always lends a paw to help out. Of course, he has to keep his ears out of his face while he works:

Friday Fun!

Here is a little fun with Sam! Click on his photo below to do a puzzle of my boy. This link will take you to another site... When you are done, click on "Exit" on the left to return to Sam's blog! It took me two minutes to finish the puzzle! Enjoy!
